About India

India is a country located in South Asia. It is one-third the size of Canada but has 35 times more people (Canada has 35 million, India has 1.2 billion). This means it is smaller than Canada, but it has a lot more people! The capital of India is New Delhi. China is to the East of India and Pakistan is to the West. The Indian Ocean borders the southern part of the country.

Ukraine Alive

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is a little smaller than Alberta but has a bigger population than Canada (Canada 35 million, Ukraine 46 million). Belarus, and Russia are next to Ukraine in the North and Poland is to the West. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv and the River Dnipro runs through it.

China Alive

China, a communist nation in East Asia, is the world’s most populous country. Its vast landscape encompasses grassland, desert, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers and 14,500km of coastline. Beijing, the ancient capital, mixes modern architecture with historic sites including sprawling Tiananmen Square. Its largest city, Shanghai, is a skyscraper-studded global financial center. The iconic Great Wall of China fortification runs east-west across the country’s north.

Building India Alive

This site is an outgrowth of the SSHRC-supported Ukraine Alive site. The principle investigator on the project is Natalie Kononenko. Technical support comes from Kamal Ranaweera, Mark McKellar, Melania Ru’Aini, and Peter Holloway. Student contributors include Kanika Bahatra, Gaurav Luthra, Rubab Naqvi, Saveena Atwal, Punit Virk and students in MLCS 399 – Folklore and the Internet. Most of the photographs were generously provided by Supratik Chakraborty and Varun Shiv Kapur.
